What software can I use to build Flash

What software can I use to build Flash without Adobe Flash? I can't afford $500+ for the Adobe Software and wonder if there are freeware / shareware available for doing flash sites?

Look at CoffeeCup.com for small flash builders. They have a nice selection of tools.

willforts, these days you can accomplish pretty much all the fancy stuff Flash does with some simple AJAX libraries. These libraries are completely free, and are developed by the community, so they'll never go away, and they will only get better with time.

I've recently started using JQuery, and the JQuery UI is more than capable of competing with Flash based applications. Check out Google's list of AJAX libraries:

You're not the only one who think the price for Flash is high. As a young web designer I was really interested in ActionScript at one point. But since I'm a Linux user, I had no luck as Adobe doesn't support this platform.

I have to voice my support for JQuery as well - it's pretty amazing.
