Does anyone have a good (fairly detailed) script for creating a form with a file upload in FrontPage? I am trying to create an area where any user can upload images (just to be storred in a folder). They can't change data, just upload.
I've tried the one on the frontpage help, but it indicates you need to turn on anonymous updates in the folder properties. When I access the folder properties, these options appear grayed out, indicating that the server does not allow anonymous updates. When I contacted HMS, they simply said go to the file permissions section of the control panel and change the permission to write. I did this, and retested my example. It doesn't appear to be working. Any help, or a link to a script for this purpose would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Lori |

This can't be done by just frontpage exts/scripts... you're going to need to apply ASP in order to get that file uploaded. Check out HMS's ASPUpload utility in their help and support section.

PHP can do this too, but I if you are using frontpage then I do not want to throw you all the tutorials as you would need quite a few.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but if you are looking into getting serious about your website...put down FrontPage and step away quickly...it's perhaps the worst tool you can possibly use to begin creating advanced websites or to teach yourself how to make a website.

You're starting to sound like lofty... you're not wrong though. |

Heh, I know - that's why I prefaced what I said - hehe. But seriously, if Lori wants to begin to dabble in ASP and image uploading and advanced features like that - FrontPage will only make her web life a living he||. Especially when she realizes that the RIGHT way of doing things is nearly TOTALLY opposite from how FrontPage does things. Lori, trust us on this one...get another web editor. |

Hence the reason I stated "you're not wrong"...

So what program do you recommend for self-help-but-unsphisticated types like me then? Frontpage is wasting a lot of my time, and then my work looks scrambled in Netscape. I am not impressed.

Sorry, ignore that last post, I found another "green" posting where the consensus appears to be Dreamweaver. Good to know.

Lori,
To answer your question yes FrontPage can do this and do it easily. There is a file size limitation though. I think 1.5meg or 2.0meg - Try testing very small files that way you know if it works or not This could be your problem. HMS supports ASPUPLOAD, http://www.aspupload.com. If you or your users will be uploading files bigger then FrontPages/DCOM limits this is what is needed. This will require some asp minipulation so some basic knowlege of asp is needed but this is something that is spelled out very well in the documentaion and a good place to start learning asp. As far as your permissions go, give the helpdesk a call again and tell them your have set the permissions and need their help to get this straightend out. The support at HMS is nothing short of spectacular and I'm sure they will help you out. Check to make sure it's not a file size problem first though, you may be suprised. For those anti-frontpage peeps. You guys are always bashing FrontPage even for some of the most basic features. I code in asp fairly well and still use FrontPage and have been for many years. There are some things it can't do, I understand that, but it's still good to have in the tool kit. My suggestion is if you can't help somebody then don't post. Trying to get them to learn a language is not an emmediate solution so if somebody asks a question about FrontPage and you answer "don't use it" then you are not really helping them are you. Your really just mudding up the forum. |

Amen to that Bruce!! Help is what FrontPage users seek, not criticism. While one might be able to be more creative with Dreamweaver... that doesn't mean the end result will be better. I've seen thousands of crappy websites which weren't FrontPage.
However, if I was a talented website developer I'd probably use Dreamweaver instead. Why? Well, even though content is more important than a flashy website, I wouldn't be concerned about it because that's the clients problem... I'd be trying to sell my services. On the other hand, some people do their own websites in which case they don't care so much about a flashy website. Most know content is king. For the do-it-yourself folks then, FrontPage is plenty good enough. So, it all depends on whether one is a developer or a webmaster of their own website. It might be appropriate that this be determined before blasting one's use of FrontPage. Besides, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. |
