Hello.

I currently use a email service other than Smartermail for all of my email. They offer a standard feature called "Personalities" which allows you to send an email from any "Personality" you setup. Meaning, You login through one single email address, say Jason@mycompany.com. and from that account, you can send email as CustomerService@MyCompany.com without physically logging in to that account. Really, if you wanted to, you can send an email posing as anyone from anywhere. (granted you won't recieve the replys back)

But anyways..my point being, does anyone know of an Outlook plugin that would let you change the "From" name, address and signature without setting up a new account in outlook for each address you want to send from. It's beginning to be a pain, and Outlook is starting to get cluttered with accounts that don't even recieve email (they are all forwarded). I just want to be able to choose the address to send from when I'm composing a message.

I am NOT using this for email spoofing! Just a way to be more organized without having so many accounts in outlook

I don't use SmarterMail for this reason alone, becuase they don't offer this "Personality" feature. (Although the Smartermail inerface is much nicer)

Thanks! Very Happy

The feature you're talking about doesn't exist in Smartermail (as you noticed) and as far as I know there isn't an Outlook equivalent either. Basically it's a pretty unique and rarely-used functionality, so I think you may be stuck with using your current program if you really depend on this feature.

Thanks Jamie..I'll just have to stick with all the accounts in outlook.

Althought this would be a nice feature for a futre edition of SmarterMail Razz

I know you can do that with Thunderbird. The only webmail client I've ever seen that allows that is Horde. I pretty much do the same thing. I have all my e-mail forwarded to one imap account, then I reply to everything from that account with different personalities (Thunderbird allows you to specify different outgoing SMTP authentication for each personality, so you're not even really spoofing).

Hmm..Well, the webmail I use is from FastMail.fm. I have all my MX records hosted there. It's by far the best, quickest, and most feature packed email I've ever used. But I'm not going to get into that..just wanted to point that out.

I've never used thunderbird. In a nutshell, how does it compare to outlook from your experience?

I guess I should ask Jamie this one-- As an Email admin, a man who knows his email, what desktop client do you use and why?

I actually don't use any desktop client except the company-enforced Outlook we have on our workstations. For my home email I use Smartermail, and I send/recieve in plain text only so when the HTML spam comes in I can easily ditch it without letting the spammers know it was opened. I also filter out all email from known foreign-assigned IP addresses. Wink

If I had a choice though I honestly don't know what I would use...it would be between Outlook (shudder) and Thunderbird though.
