I've been looking for an answer to this question, but have been unable to locate it in the FAQs or here in the forums...

Basically, I understand that 'aliased' domains are different from 'subdomains'

Examples:

Main domain name: domain1.com
Sample SubDomain: forum.domain1.com
Sample Aliased Domain: domain2.com ==> domain1.com

I have a main domain name, and 2 alternate domain names that both need to point to the main domain name...

Examples:

domain1.com ==> default website
domain2.com ==> domain1.com
domain3.com ==> domain1.com

Using the control panel, how is this done? I do not see an area in the control panel that allows me to 'add' alias domains that simply point to the primary domain... Normally, this would be done by creating a new zone on the DNS server for each of the 'alias' domains, and point their 'A' records to the IP address of the primary domain...

How is this done at HostMySite.Com?

Thanks,

What you're referring to is a domain pointer, actually. In order to manage a domain name via the Control Panel, HMS has to add it to your account. Simply email support@hostmysite.com and give the two pointers that you want to use. Specify that you want them added to your control panel as exact duplicates of your primary domain and we'll do the work for you.

Afterwards, you can login to your control panel and update the DNS zone file for those domains if you wish to repoint them to another location. The reason why you can't add domains yourself is simple - doing so would create a local zone file in our DNS servers, and if you added a domain that wasn't yours (i.e. hotmail.com, msn.com, whitehouse.gov) it could cause problems in proper domain resolution.

Well, I've heard them called all kinds of things... While the term 'alias' can be confused with CNAME records, the term 'pointer' can be confused with PTR records, so while they are both used frequently, neither of them is very good at describing the issue.

Yes, I agree that some might abuse it. However, I'm a responsible adult, and I just wanted to get my domain names into the system (no way for you to know that though). I put in a ticket yesterday, and it was solved yesterday. Thanks anyway.
