I'm preparing a list of features that we would like to see incorporated into the next version of SmarterMail, due out in July/August. Here's the current list - please post here if you have a feature request not listed below.

ADMINISTRATION
- ability to allow domain admins to see all of their user passwords on a per domain basis from the Server Administrator login
- ability to impersonate a user like we can currently impersonate a domain (and make this available to domain admins if the server admin chooses)
- The Search option needs to be changed so that hitting ENTER after typing in your search string it will submit the search. Currently it just reloads the page.
- Search feature added to the mail queue area so we can check the status of specific emails in the queue (instead of having to search through all of them to find it)
- ability to search through domain aliases

FILTERS
- outgoing filters (on user level and domain level)
- copy action: the ability to copy a message to an address as a filter action instead of just forward
- spam probablilty content filter clarification
- Better control over spam/content filtering
For example, the content filtering offers more actions than Spam filtering, and to work around you have to set the Spam filters to "no action" and then use the content filtering to check for Spam Probability. This isn't intuitive at all and needs to be changed/clarified.
- ability to filter based off a 'not' condition with all current filters
- when viewing a message, a button to add the sender address/domain to the Trusted Senders list.


MAILING LISTS
- search for a subscriber
- modify a subscriber address (instead of just delete)
- bounce processing (bounced messages disable or delete the subscriber address)
- better moderation (where messages to be moderated go to a queue, similar to Mailman's moderation abilities)
- BOLD warning text on 'anyone post' and 'subscriber post' options of the Who Can Post? setting
- web interface for subscribing/unsubscribing
i.e. each list has a page that you can browse to with a simple unsubscribe option

CONTACTS
- domain-wide contacts (set by the domain administrator)
-Any e-mail address added or alias added to the domain should be automatically entered into the contacts list. (or at least have an option to add it to a domain wide contacts list)
- a button called "ADD TO CONTACTS" that adds the email address of a sender to your contact list when you are reading/viewing their message
- Bulk import and export of contact lists

MISC
- full menu functionality on individual messages.
For example, while reading a message, you can not move the current message to another folder. You have to return to the inbox (folder level) to do the move.
- AutoSave Draft
If you start typing an email then need to select another option for whatever reason your email is lost unless you saved it as a draft first. If you start a new message and leave the new message to go somewhere else it should auto save the draft or give a pop box as an option to save or disgard changes.
- Search Messages: ability to search through messages in a folder by the TO: address (especially in the Sent folder)
- ability to preview messages in a Preview Pane, like the one that Outlook has. This would be something you could enable/disable in the user settings.
- ability to login to more than one smartermail account at once (using different windows - this is currenty prohibited by the session termination)
- calendaring

- Default sort order on messages should be date DESCENDING, not date ASCENDING

When editing user information - instead of listing ALL the users at once after selecting the appropriate domain, allow admins to page through the users with a configureable number of users per page. We ahve 10,000+ users on one domain and to add a single user, the app sits there and spits out a list of all 10,000+ users. what a PITA

(I have written a new admin system for us though that fixes this problem, but it would be nice to see it in the official product...)

Today I had someone ask that they expand some of the text boxes (ie the part where you add trusted senders) so that longer email addresses will be accepted, if a particular email is really long it currently expands to the second line which just looks weird...

I missed this thread before when I posted a request in a separate thread in this forum. I thought I'd add it my request directly to this "official" list. I'd like the ability to control the account access methods on an account-by-account basis. In other words, for each account, I'd like to individually allow/disallow account access via POP3, IMAP, and/or the web interface. (For a number of my accounts, I'd like to allow web and IMAP access, but disallow POP3 access).

This is obviously too late for the summer 2005 release, but maybe for the next release:

- Apply content and spam filters (both domain-wide and individual) to aliases as well as users.

- In incoming message headers, include the address that the message was really addressed to.

- Add a decent keyboard interface for admin functions. For example (and this is the one I'd like most), in the root's "Email Accounts" list, jump to an account when I type its first letter(s).

A block sender feature would be nice.

I really like your feature requests for SmarterMail. Now it's December 2005, and many of these features have not been adopted by SmarterMail. Clearly that's not your fault ... but I'm curious how SmarterTools responded to your feature requests, and if you have any idea when or if some of these features will be adopted.

I appreciate the thought you put into these feature ideas, as well as your openness to other suggestions.

Funny you should mention that. About half the requests above are included in Smartemail v3.0, which is due out no later than the middle of next month. It was supposed to have been released earlier, however it was pushed back so they could work on SmarterStats 3.0, which in my opinion was a good move since the new stats program is MUCH nicer as well.

Those features I requested that are *not* included will be put into minor updates starting around the beginning of Q2 next year. If you have any further questions about this, please let me know.

Someone asked for delivery receipt confirmation today, that might be handy..

Yes, but that feature will probably be a long time in coming. I'm not aware of any web-based tools that do read receipts, only Outlook.

They need to add an "Add Contact" button to the message screen so people can add contacts based off who sends them e-mail. Maybe we won't get threated with mass homicide by customers anymore. (yes, it did happen once because of that).

Already requested; this will be in v3.0 I believe.
