http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/internet/06/07/china.internet.reut/index.html

Did anyone else read this article at CNN.com? Basically, it says that
"...every China-based Web site now had to register and provide complete information on its organizers by June 30 or face being declared illegal."
Wow. They also have
"...a new system for monitoring sites in real time and spotting those that fail to comply."
Wow, again. It says that three-quarters of the domestic web sites have already registered with the government. One of their aims is to force "radical" websites to move abroad...and when they do that, China can block them! Triple wow. In case you didn't know,
"China is the second-largest Internet market, with about 100 million users and still growing."
It's also the
"world's largest jailer of cyber dissidents, having detained more than 60 people for expressing their views online, according to a Reporters Without Borders report from last June."
So what does this mean to us? It means get ready for a whole new customer base here in the US; and if they want top-notch hosting, they'll come to HostMySite.com!

You and I both know that they can TRY to block sites, but there's no REAL blocking of internet content...

This kind of squelching of free speach though is a perfect example of why we might want to think long and hard again about renewing MFN status with China...it would hurt the economy I know and probably be political suicide for whoever was in office, but still, when 1/4th of the population of the earth is still basically being held captive by their own government, somebody has to do the right thing...and it sure ain't gonna be the French...

The interesting thing to note is that a VERY large percentage (say in the 90's) of spam that you recieve actually comes from APNIC, the Asian-Pacific IP block. If China represents "the second-largest Internet market, with about 100 million users and still growing" then it follows that most of that traffic is coming from China.

So apparently they find exception to their citizens using any form of freedom of speech, but they don't care if their citizens attempt to scam Americans with false claims of a low mortgage rate or cheap viagra.
