There are a variety of free WhoIs lookups available on the web, but most will only perform a lookup on domains of a certain type (i.e. .com, .org, .net, and a few others). Often you have to actually find the homepage for the Registry of that particular domain extension in order to find a lookup for it. Here are some resources to help you locate the WhoIs or Registry homepage that will find the domain you're looking for:

Anyone know of a free web service to do WhoIS lookups or even one to tell if a domain name is registered? Any other options that are available which could be fully integrated into someone elses site would be appreciated.

If you're setup as a reseller for a domain registrar, often they'll provide an API that includes WhoIs functionality.
