I understand that new sites are being set up on Smarter Mail. Can I have one of my current sites moved to the SmarterMail server? This is one account where there is one store and we have the possibility of getting the rest of the chain - 15-20 more - and their only complaint is too much spam.

Thanks.

Kris,

We are currently only setting up new accounts on SmarterMail. Our plan is to convert our existing mail servers to SmarterMail. This will be occurring over the next few months. Unfortunately I do not have any definate information for you, like which servers are first or the timeline, but once everything is finalized and we are ready to proceed we will notify everyone.

We realize how important email is to everyone. We will be taking the necessary steps to ensure that the upgrade is as smooth as possible and will be giving everyone ample time to adjust to the new system and to inform their customers about the new system.

Once we have more information for you we will let you know. We appreciate everyones patience while we take this next step.

Well, I'm dissapointed to hear that, especailly since it concerns a bunch of new hosting accounts. Please keep me informed since I do want to move that account asap.

Thanks.

I've noticed that some of the current accounts are being moved to the new mail servers. That is great!!

Is it true that no filters move to the new servers? Under the old system we could ask for a standard set of filters to be applied to accounts. Can I do that also with the new email system? Also, is SmarterMail better at filtering out spam before those filters are applied?

Thanks for the info.

Yes - the filter systems are completely different, and won't translate from one to the other.

Honestly I am not sure at this point since it has not been requested. It depends on how the filters are saved in the Smartermail interface - once you setup a new account let me know and I can attempt an import from another site to see what happens. Also the Domain Spam Filtering settings, which I feel are the most powerful, can be easily modified unlike the Imail server's interface.

Also, is SmarterMail better at filtering out spam before those filters are applied?

The SmarterMail filters are not defaulted to any action, so you would need to login at least once to set them up, and then you should see a noticeable improvement.

I think that answers all your questions - if you have any others please let me know!

Hello Bruce,

If you send an email to support@hostmysite.com we can get you a copy of the text file that contains your current IMail filters and a copy of the XML file that stores the SmarterMail filters. If you do find a way to easily convert the filters definately let us know. The main roadblock is that IMail filters are usually in the format of

F!~\.com!AND!F!~\.net!:!BOUNCE!

which I believe means if the From address does not contain .com and .net then bounce the message.

Smartermail content filtering is stored in an xml file in the following format

- <ContentFilterGroup>
<id>1</id>
<title>Filter1</title>
<matchtype>And</matchtype>
- <Filter>
<field>FromAddress</field>
<search>email@domain.com</search>
</Filter>
- <Action>
<type>Delete</type>
</Action>
</ContentFilterGroup>

which says if the From address contains email@domain.com the message should be deleted.

Imail filtering usings something akin to regular expressions I believe, while SmarterMail modeled their filters after what you would find in MS Outlook since that's what the average internet user makes use of.

Normally I'd say modeling after an MS Product of any sort is a bad idea (these are the ppl that gave us such wonders as the Blue Screen of Death) however in this case it makes for filters that are fairly comprehensive yet easy to understand for the novice internet users.
