Are you referring to the best type of forum software perhaps? I think phpBB is up there - it's very robust and FREE, which is always good to boot.

But I have to agree with Bobum that the best webhost would be HostMySite.com...then again I'm somewhat biased. If you choose not to go with us, I'd suggest staying away from Interland and GoDaddy - both have sent us so many clients due to their poor service that I think we sent them Christmas cards this year.

Stay away from OnMatrix.com like the plague...

I must admit - I am a "don't put all your eggs in one basket" kinda guy - so in addition to HostMySite, I use Jodohost.com. Just to give you another alternative.

I use Jodohost as a test platform. They're super cheap, with a ton of features and flexibility, but they also seem to have a lot of crashes and hardware failures. They're always very apologetic, but I wouldn't depend on them for a critical web app.

I'm using www.BoardNation.com to host my forums. They're cheap, and they'll set up a number of different board apps for you, if you don't like their standard options. Their support is a little slow, but I think they're a very small company. So far this hasn't been a major problem for me.

Unless I'm mistaken, if you want to host a board here, you'll have to set up the forum software yourself on an account from HostMySite. What I like about Boardnation was that they took care of all of the database and installing the board software for me. I just use the forum software's admin control panel to take it from there. (This was good for me because I'm more of a Windows guy, and most of the forum software seems to be PHP/Linux/MySQL oriented).

The thing I really liked about jodohost was the fact that I got my database as part of my base plan. I've been with them for about 5 months now and so far so good - they even called me one time after I had a trouble ticket in to make sure that everything was ok and up to par. That's pretty good stuff right there...if HMS offered a SQLServer DB with their basic plan (at no additional cost) - I'd not be at Jodohost though I have to admit...

cmon HMS - gimme a freebie! Very Happy

In the future we might consider adding SQL to some of the lower plans, however currently it adds so much overhead that we have to restrict it somewhat.

Your concerns have been noted, however - we never ignore our clients!

jodohost.com $6.95 + a MS sql db, do you know how many db's they must put on a license to break even on that deal, I'll take a crack at it and say at least 1000, other than that they are probably using the same license on all their servers, so make sure you have local copies of all your stuff for when they get thrown in jail Smile

Remember we do have SmarterLinux.com and all accounts come with a MySQL database. Most current forums you'd use are PHP/MySQL anyway, so this is a good solution
Snitz Forum is in ASP, runs fast, and it's FREE

Jurisdictionary has been using the FREE Snitz Forum for over a year.
We like it ... and our customers do, too!
Has all the bells and whistles.
Easy to install on your site. Cool

Smarterlinux.com, which comes with a MySQL database, really is a good solution if you are looking for a PHP based board as Paul mentioned. I run a two of my own on there without any major issues for about 2.5 years now.

I totally agree with byron, stay away with low cost plan with SqlServer. You can't stand the slowness and a good chance of data corruption. If you can't afford a more valued plan, then absolutely shoot for a Linux plan.

Also, ther is a plus version or I should say a hacked version of phpBB that emebeds a lot of useful modules pre-installed:

One thing to remember, phpBB plus is not backward compatible with phpBB. You can upgrade from phpBB to phpBB plus but not the other way around.

I'm working with a Snitz2000 forum for a client on off hours, and it's seriously depressing me. phpBB ROCKS.

Same here. Snitz is nothing but just bad. Once you tried phpBB, you probably don't feel the need to try other ones.

Precisely. I can't code at all and it was easy for me to install PhpBB on the Hostmysite.com servers. Now the servers at www.dca.net however are something else entirely. I used to work there and it was like pulling teeth to get it installed there. meh.
