to answer you ? in a whole, the simpler the better. just plain, simple and to the point. The ppl want the info and be on their way or find what they want to buy and be on their way. graphics are nice but who really cares? look at google, a total of 1 graphic on their home page. why distract ppl??

now sites like 2advanced are nice eye candy but horrible for selling items and sure they look great but turn a lot of ppl off.

things seem to be going 2 ways, 1 is the flash way like 2advanded and now with flash remoting the flex, it becomes a real possibilty to deliver that kind od content rather easily.
the other and more accepting is designing in cssp (aka tableless design) which is really catching fire. its smaller, faster & more compatible then anything we have ever scene. look at www.zengarden.com, its really a great way to go.

but(as we all know i gotta throw this in lol) the main problem with anything we will be making is hacking it to work with ie. If its not hacking through there crappy box model its having to load our swf movies different to be compliant and still work if the embedding lawsuit finally wins out. An unfortunatly, ms has no plans of fixing the issues, so we are gunna have to deal with it or hope they get nuked.

www.betterwebdesign.com.au/ has it right, at least the right idea
Fast-loading, user-friendly websites

If you are looking for a professional, fast-loading website, where information is easily accessible to all visitors, regardless of what they are using to access your site, you've come to the right place.

Most people still connect to the Internet via relatively slow dial-up modem connections and are looking for information.

Consider the following:

* Does your website put potential customers on hold?
* Will they wait 5 to 10 minutes for an online TV commercial to load?
* Will they install extra software just to use your website?
* Will they be able to find what they are looking for?

Given our focus on lean code and quick load, we avoid designing graphics-intensive websites. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but what if the picture can't be viewed?

*applause* you beat me to it loftboy Wink

Do NOT use tables for design, and use as few images as humanly possible. Images = longer load time. And even if your audience is broadband, I say that still applies. No matter the connection speed, why make people wait any longer than they have to? Exactly.

And tables? Tables are for holding data, not for layout (thought I'd never actually say it lol). Tables are very restrictive and require alot of clever coding to get things to always display properly. However, Layers (DIV) are a godsend when designing a site. Just put some time into it. I know it seems harder in the beginning, but it's ALOT easier in the end, and you'll end up asking yourself "Why did I fight w/ tables for so long?"

www.coolhomepages.com is a great site to look for inspiration. I'm a fan of the Very Clean section. They have efficient use of white space with out clutter.
