OS: Vista Ultimate (OEM)

Trying real hard to wire this monster up. I'm guessing that Expression's internal server either does not work with MSSE (messy?), or it needs to be wired up somehow.

I've installed .net 3.5 redistributable, then the MSSE 2005 advanced, but got errors with it. I remember having to install IIS the last time I installed it, and figure that is why it would not install or configure properly, and the control interfaces are nowhere to be found. So I think I'm going to need to install IIS, and then reinstall the MSSE 2005 advanced.

Long story short, I'm trying to build a simple database. So far I've built the database and a table with SQL Server Management Studio Express, but not even sure that is properly installed and configured. So I've got a 'mydatabase.sdf' on my desktop, and am wondering how to get data into the table? I'm thinking that after installing IIS, which is included with Vista Ultimate I think, that I'll be able to wire up an ASP.net form that will accept input.

Easy to install and learn? The next page was installing Visual Studio Express. I don't get it. Bet it still wouldn't work. I think it needs IIS. I don't want to mess up anything, like the Expression installation (which has the internal server), while trying to do this. Am I getting close?

Hi there,

Have you tried visual web developer 2008? It doesn't have the designer friendly aspects of Expression, but if you are looking to do simple development and DB manipulation it can handle that. I've installed it on XP and it doesn't require IIS. I haven't had any experiences with it on Vista though.

Hello: For all: I've downloaded and installed:

dotNetFx35setup.exe (.Net v3.5)
fixwmi.cmd - a fix for the wmi
IIS 7.0 and associated files
sqlncli.msi - a fix for sql native client
SQLEXPR_ADV.EXE - SQL Express Advanced

The fixwmi.cmd and sqlncli.msi were not mentioned in the install docs, but I couldn't get the installations to complete without errors without them. I found them when searching for solutions to the installation errors. So I'm still not sure, after using them, that what I have is valid, but I'm guessing that valid or not the solutions will get the job done. Overall though, I did not like the experience. It was messy.

The results could have created security holes, or have a system running services and processes that do it more harm than good. I could have read all the documents in MSDN library on the three products, and still not be confident from the software integration aspect that using the system will be as efficient and productive as possible.

I had used Frontpage and VWD previously and had major issues with code validation, mostly because I didn't want to go back and create the website from scratch so that it would follow all the rules. That was my bad, but still it was a problem. With CSS liquid layouts, Expression web does not display them properly in the editor, but they are still doable.

I'll try using Expression web to create an ASP.net page and wire up db controls.

Then, I will install VB Express to code the windows application.

A little mouse is squeeking in the back of my brain that I could have avoided all of this by coding the db's with MSXML. I'm looking into that possibility and if true, then I will be doing some uninstall and start over activities.
