| basic IIS 6 question -- how to secure a directory? |
|

Hi. This is a very basic question but I'm not able to find a basic answer.
My client wants to password protect a directory on his web site. I figure I can set up in IIS 6 a username and password to secure a directory. I see that directories, by default, have anonymous access granted, with user IUSR_TEMPLATE and a secure password (which I guess is the root password to my VPS?) If I want to set up a username and password to a directory -- eg., www.ascassociation.org/test/ -- what procedure should I use to do that? If someone can point me at documentation I can figure it out. Thanks very much, as always. Eric |

Last I knew you still had to request this to be handled by HMS staff. They're required to set an IIS permission and that can only still be done via remoting into the server, not in the Control Panel. It's a 5 minute fix, though, so if you email support let them know...
1) The folder you want protected 2) The username(s) and password(s) to set |

Actually I do connect to my VPS server by remote desktop connection. I have root access to my server.
This seems like something I should be able to do without bugging HMS. I'll ask them. Thanks very much for your reply! Eric |

Hi Eric,
This should do the trick: http://www.hostmysite.com/support/dedicated/IIS/passwordprotect/ Please let us know if you have any trouble with this or you find that it is in error. Thanks for posting! Regards, Dave Malone |
