updated -- advice to migrate sites from shared to VPS??

Hi. (I have rewritten this post.) I am a new VPS user. I have many web sites hosted at HMS, all on shared servers, and each with its own separate HMS account.

My goal is to migrate all of these sites to my VPS.

I read the "Set Up A New Site" FAQ. Also I have been reading the VPS documentation and notes at length (and I salute HMS for providing such well written content).

It looks very easy, but I am confused about some things. I'll use one site, hwaet.com, as an example.

* hwaet.com has its own IP address and is an existing site on a shared server, not a new site -- so, does the setup process change?

* I want to use ColdFusion and MS SQL Server 2005 for hwaet.com. Should I keep the hwaet.com IP address, and set up hwaet.com as an IP based site? Or should I set up hwaet.com as a name based site? Does ColdFusion care? Does MS SQL Server 2005 care?

* do I need to do anything to delete hwaet.com from the shared server?

* can I consolidate all of my HostMySite billing accounts -- for example, I just paid the annual hosting fee for hwaet.com -- can I get credit for this fee if I move hwaet.com to the VPS? Question

* it seems like other people must have gone through this process before; I'm grateful to hear your advice on the matter

* if someone can even point me at a HOW-TO that would be great

We often times recommend that our dedicated customers use http://websitemovers.com to assist in the migration process if you have a large number of domains.

However since a VPS is a self managed solution perhaps you may want to consider one of our managed solutions.

The reason I recommend a managed dedicated server is because it operates in exactly the same way as you are used to in a shared environment. Whereas the task of administering a VPS is solely the customer's responsibility.
