Hi approximately how many domains would you say are typically hosted on one of your shared servers?
Not counting the Premium accounts since we know how many are on there. Thanks! |

The number varies from server to server, but I think it is approximately 150 on Developer/Ecom servers, and 200 - 300 on Standard servers (no databases there so there is less strain on the server)

This may also change somewhat in the future. We are considering having CF only servers and .NET only servers, etc, you get the idea, to save on server load and licensing costs. Also running multiple instances of CF to help server stability.

that last thought is a GREAT idea... the segregation of services will provide a more stable experience for some as well as keeping resources pretty open for the task at hand. Also, you may be able to put far more .NET sites on a server than CF just because of the reliability issues surrounding the current version of CF. With .NET, only bad coding causes the issues, not the service itself. Well, not very often anyway

Would you still have some servers that had both technogolies? We have a large site that uses CF mainly but we have started to do some of it in .NET. Having some servers with both technologies would be helpful also for anyone re-writing code from one to the other.

...which is the primary reason why we keep both running on our dev servers. Why segregate when clients are likely to either use both or to go back and forth 'tween the two sets of servers (which takes a significant effort on our part)? |

I would imagine we would have .NET running on all the CF servers. There is no reason not to. The MX boxes will have multiple instances as well, so we can seperate the "bad" people

Are you saying there are databases running on the developer boxes? Do you mean Access or is SQL Server actually running on the webservers? |

No, we have dedicated database machines for MS SQL Server. Access runs on the webserver - it is a desktop database and that is just the way it works.

Now that would be scary. No, as Lou said we don't run SQL on anything but servers dedicated to that purpose. If we tried running SQL, CF, and IIS on the same server it would be a greek tragedy in the making. |
