I currently have a windows VPS (256 Ram). But I found that there wasn't enough ram to run mysql 5.0. So I have mysql 5.0 running on a shared box. My question is if I had a .net VPS ( 512 Meg Ram ) would it be faster to run mysql locally on the VPS or would it be better to keep the Mysql on a shared DB server.

Well, speed wise I don't think you would see a huge difference as long as you are using the internal address of the shared server. If you don't mind the limitations of the shared server, then just leave it there. although there is much more you can do when you have full control. I have mySQL5 running on my VPS with no issues or huge memory leaks
