Problems with a new VPS CF+ account...

Hi,

I have recently signed up for a second VPS CF+ account..... but we have had nothing but trouble with it. The problems have been as follows:

1. Can not log on to SQL Server via SQL Server Management Studio.
2. Can not access CF Admin, SmartStats or SmarterMail admins (receive a 404 error).

The support guys have managed to fix the SQL Server logon and have got the 3 admin sites working to a degree.... External Javascript files are not being returned from the server (404 error), and from looking at IIS it looks as though no MIME types exist on the server...

We have been through 3 seperate IP addresses / accounts now and all have had the same problems.

Has anybody else encountered problems such as these??

I am reluctant to carry on using an account that does not work as it should from the outset. Bear in mind that these are fresh accounts. All I have done is logon to the VPS through remote desktop.

I am thinking of cashing in my 30 day money back gaurantee and starting again... but I have no way of knowing that I won't get the same problems again.... very frustrated.

On our other VPS account (CF7), everything just worked straight away and we had no problems setting anything up.

Any of your thoughts, suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.

All teh best,

Martin

Hmm.. That sounds odd. I have never experienced a problem like that. Not even when I signed up for the beta trial. Sounds like there was a setup/config problem on the image. Did you ask to be assigned to a different Virtual Server?

Hi Jason,

No, I did not specify that I wanted to be on a different server... I just hoped that a new account would fix the problem.

I have since asked for another one but have not heard back from anybody yet. I will chace it up shortly...

Cheers,

The latest response from Hostmysite insists that nothing is wrong with the account... Hmmm.

That would suggest that the link sent to everyone for their CF Admin url in the 'Account Information' email should never actually work for anyone....

It would mean that before you can actually log onto SQL Server Managment Studio for the first time, you have to open a trouble ticket to ask that the support team get it working for you.

It will also mean that you have to manually insert any MIME types that you require - this server has no MIME types setup at all.

It means that you have to open another trouble ticket to kick the SQL Server backup job into life.

It also means that IIS must be reconfigured to allow SmarterStats and SmarterMail to work, or you must somehow know that you can start them as standalone services with their own web server.

In all it means that you must spend a week talking to support to get the server in a state that it is almost usable...

Getting very miffed with this now...

Did you get this resolved? I am having the same issues on a CF +VPS, the IIS sites will not serve up .js files, and no mimetypes are lised, but ifI copy the .js file to .txt IIS returns it just fine. I also had a number of problems getting SQL Management Studio finally working after support "made some changes".

Hi efused,

I ended up configuring most of it myself as we had a client on the other end waiting for their site to go live. We add MIME types as we need them now. I think that HostMySite eventually admitted that there had been a problem in setting up this account, but I did not get a fresh account that was configured correctly....

I also had to change the maximum number of simultaneous threads in the CF admin. The account came with it set to 50 - which is ridiculously high and was killing the server. We have lowered this on all our VPS accounts to 5 or 6.

We also set the maximum amount of RAM avaialble to SQL Server to half the avaialable RAM on the server. Otherwise, we were finding that it slowly ate up all the resources and brought the server to its knees.

Hope this is of some help....

Hi efused,

I am sorry to hear you have been having trouble. If you add a MIME type of

application/x-javascript

for files with the .js extension that should do the trick. This is something that should have been configured correctly and I apologize for the trouble.

If you are still running into problems that support cannot handle, please PM me. Thanks!
