Greetings,

I'm looking at moving an existing WordPress blog over from a shared hosting plan, to the WordPress blog plan here at HostMySite, for a friend.

I'm looking for comments from existing users of this plan. In particular, can someone confirm that we can upload our own custom themes?

Thanks!

Hello,
Unfortunately I do not know of anyone using the blog plan. To be honest, since WordPress Blogs are hosted on separate servers than your shared account, and they do not consume your shared server's resources, you would save 45 dollars by sticking with your shared plan. If I am missing something, please let me know.

Thanks comprug.

Actually, I'm using a Windows VPS plan, lower-end. I don't want to install PHP, etcetera, and I don't mind HostMySite getting the ~$4/month ... I'm not paying for it, so cost isn't really an issue.

Thanks for the advice, though!
Sorry

Sorry I made a false assumption. As per the Blog plan, Custom themes etc. is listed on the feature list. They are also running a promotion so you can save 10$.

No problem, I appreciate it Very Happy

Can you point me to the promotion?

Also, I did see that custom themes was listed, but information about this (listed elsewhere, that is) is fairly scarce. I guess it's just the scarring from my past experiences getting the best of me ... hence my doubting.

Thanks!

http://hostmysite.com/blogtour

BTW you also get FTP access to your blog server. Therefore you can essentially install any themes/extensions you want.

We had the Blog Tour USA people in the other day Smile Enjoy the promotion!

Just for an update:

I tried to purchase the plan using the link on the Blog Tour plan, but I kept losing the discount after logging in.

After a couple of days I finally contacted billing (then support) to see if the issue was on my end, or what. It seems it's an issue with the site, which may be fixed at the time of this post.

Anyways, Ben got me setup.

The next issue I ran into was that when I went to setup my blog, it was reporting that it was already installed. A short while after connecting with support, issue resolved.

I'm moving a blog that's currently hosted with iPower(Web) (primarily because of down times, but support, as little as I used it, was a contributing factor - I moved everything else to a Windows VPS) so I wanted to import 200+ posts w/ comments. After a quick email to support (I wanted to import a 2.4 MB XML file, via the new WordPress Import/Export functionality, and I could only upload files up to 2 MB in size) they upped the limit.

Unfortunately, WordPress can't seem to handle that many posts, so after the initial import, I had to go back in and copy/paste items into a new XML file for reimporting. I ended up doing about 4 imports total. Very much a WordPress issue.

After setting up my other settings though, I ran into one more issue - permalink structure.

I'm using a custom solution (/year/post-title/), and .htaccess files aren't supported by default.

So, when I changed the structure, I'd get a 500 error. Simply uploading an empty .htaccess file would clear up the issue, but it still left the problem with porting the content over.

But, surprise-surprise, after an email to support, giving them the rules that I wanted, and why I wanted it, permalinks now work as they did before.

At this point I'm just waiting for the domain to transfer over to HMS, and then I don't think I'll be bothering support again for quite some time Very Happy

Overall, I'm extremely impressed with support. I feel like I've been bothering these guys quite a bit, but that's just me. Unlike support you may receive from other providers, every email from HMS moves forward towards a solution; here's what we need, here's what we'll do. No stalling, no thumb twiddling.

EDIT: Spelling/grammar mistake.

Glad to hear that everything is up and running. The billing issue probably ocurred because the promo cookie was deleted when you logged in and received a new session.
