What I'd like to see is an new account type that is identical to the current Ultra Developer but with a lower limit to the number of accounts per server.
It's a huge jump from $30 (Ultra Developer) to $129(Premium Managed) but my site is running slow and right now I really don't have anywhere to go but Premium Managed Hosting.
How about a $50 option?
And you might just consider testing out the response by offering it on the Developer Forum and to interested parties who call in looking for more speed from their accounts.
Kind of an internal "x-Treme" plan.

I've talked with people that moved to premium accounts and suffered with the same problems they had previously. Are you sure this is not something caused by your code vs the server? Just a quick question. Because if it really truly isn't the server and it is your code then you will still experience the same difficulties.

Instead of jumping to Premium hosting, you could also try having your site moved to a different server. If that doesn't solve it, I'll almost put money that it's something with your application, and in which case a Premium account won't help that.

Thanks for breaking it down for me josh.
I wish it was the code, but I've had this site on many servers for many years.
I have a pretty good handle on how fast it should run and currently it runs slow.
I'm not complaining! For the price it runs fine.
That still doesn't address the problem of having a gap between a $30 account and a $130 account.
I'd just like to see an option for people like me who would like a little more "room to breathe" on the server without the significant jump to a Premium account.

I fully understand where you were coming from. I just wanted to present you with other idea's that may alleviate your problem.

The reason the premium servers are priced so highly is that you will have NO MORE than 25 sites per box. That's a HUGE plus for the customer as well as the tech because they can much more easily trace problems if they're not stemming from what "seems" to be the problem.

Maybe they should offer something in between... a Premium Lite account... no more than 75 sites per box, cut all the other specs in half, and charge somewhere in the middle...$60-$70 per month. That makes good sense to me Wink

Right on Josh. Always gotta rule out the obvious stuff before we break out the big stick.
Although "Premium Lite" sounds kind of weak. I prefer Über Developer! Wink

I can't be 100% on this because I have NOTHING to do with any pricing decisions. Having said that, I think Josh was close to the mark with his comment on the domain limitation of the Premium Servers. Having only 25 domains per account gives the server a MUCH greater level of stability, to the point where I would consider it for most mission-critical applications.

The downside (for us) is that having that few clients significantly raises costs in terms of rackspace and hardware required, plus infrastructure costs for deploying the new server. That's just a few, but I'm sure there are other considerations as well.

There are definitely other costs involved and also it comes down to demand as well. Typcially if a site seems to hit the ceiling of its current plan then things can be done to fine tune the server to squeeze better performance out of it. I've seen sites that have run 1000% better with some minor changes to applicaton settings and adjustments for the site in question.

That's very true rj.
But I am running under the assumption that HostMySite has probably got the servers about as tuned as possible. From all of my conversations with the technical staff they seem to be very good at what they do and have a very strong grasp on exactly what their servers are up to.
All I'm asking for is a plan that falls between the $30 Ultra Dev offering and the $130 Premium plan.
I would once again assume that HostMySite puts up new servers at a fairly regular rate.
I'm just asking if one of those could be for a new account type falling between the two current offerings I mentioned above.
It seems to me if you can charge $130 for a guarantee of only 25 sites per box (Premium) that you could still make money on a plan that cost $65 and guaranteed 50 sites per box.
