I just got set up with the Windows CF VPS +. All went well, but from time to time I found that Cold fusion would just reset itself. I traced it down to the server running out of Virtual Memory. Seems that these VPS use a fixed 1 GB swap file that seems to be controlled by Virtuozzo (VPS software).

Has any one set up an additional SWAP file up on one of your local VPS drives? Is this a bad idea? I found an older tech note on Virtuozzo website that indicated that it was better to do it in the Virtuozzo console, and of course I don't have access to that.

TIP: If you find that you are running out of Virtual Memory on your VPS check SQL's memory setting, Mine was set to use a Max of 2.14 PB (Yeah, I really mean 2.14 Peta Bytes ) Must have been a mis config by host my site. Reducing that help a lot.

I also installed the Verity Search engine and it insists on taking 256ish MB of the 1 GB Swap file.

I had a similar problem with my VPS reporting incorrect memory, as well as the CF Service restarting.

Open up a support ticket and tell them exactly what is going on. I have noticed that VPS issues usually take a bit longer to resolve, but my problems have always been resolved.

Thanks Jason101,

The only problem is I have done this a few different times and I get a response from what seems like a first level tech with a "rubber stamp" or "Boiler Plate" answer about CF and SQL both use lots of RAM and maybe a dedicated server might be some thing I should be looking into. (I just moved form a 1.5 GHz / 1GB Ram dedicated server, running this same code for years with out problem.)

Maybe I will try opening another support ticket.

Thanks,

Just an update. I called Host My Site Talked with a support guy, he went off an checked with a VPS expert, and came back with the answer that, Yes, I can add a page file to any of the VPS virtual drives. However unlike the magic 1GB base virtual memory any additional SWAP file will be taking up space on my VPS drives.

So I will try it, I gotta wait for off hours to reboot.

I'll report back here.

Update:
I thought I would double check and get a second opinion on making that page file. I called HMS again and directly asked can I add a page file. The techs answer was, "I don't know" I think then I asked him to go check the VPS expert. He came back and said that his VPS expert said that the VPS will ignore any page file that I make, and that the virtual memory is handled by Virtuozzo and can not be changed.

Then I called him out and told him that I had asked this same question to another tech and that tech went off and asked the VPS expert and came back with the answer that I could made the page file and it would work just like any windows OS. Then I asked him who should I believe? I then asked to speak to the VPS expert, but he was on another call and I was going to be out for the afternoon. So, I am going to try and talk to the VPS expert today.

Update2
I tried adding a page file but after the reboot the setting for virtual memory go back to no page file. This is what I expected, virtual memory is handled by Virtuozzo. I thought it odd that you would be able to add your own.

So, I guess that is the answer. No you can not add a page file.
