I am not 100% clear how DNS is handled by HMS. I asked support via chat but did not get a very knowledgeable answer as the tech had to ask somebody else.
Now, I know very little about DNS myself so I can hardly blame the guy. What I need to know is how, or what method is appropriate and or best for pointing NS records to my new VPS server. It's not clear to me if HMS is handling the DNS for VPS or if I need to set up my own DNS server. I am currently trying ns1.lnhi.net and ns2.lnhi.net but the domain is not showing up. So I would assume that I have to either use an outside DNS server like everydns.net to point to my IP address or I need to install my own dns server on the VPS. At least this is what I think my options are. What are you all doing, and what is the simplest yet best method? Thanks in advance. |

You do not need to install DNS or name servers on your VPS.
First Off, You need to point the name servers to HMS: Primary: ns1.lnhi.net (209.41.184.100) Secondary: ns2.lnhi.net (65.36.160.56) Tertiary: ns3.lnhi.net (65.36.160.1 Then, In your HMS control panel, you need to setup a host DNS record on your domain, and point it to the IP address of your VPS. After you do that, your domain should resolve to your VPS with no problem. See here: http://www.hostmysite.com/support/cpanel/dns/advanced_manager/ About setting up DNS records in the control panel. |

If your domain is registered with a registrar other than HMS, you cannot point a domain to your VPS without creating a support ticket to have the record added to the DNS server. This is a pain. We should be able to add the record to the DNS thru the control panel. The control panel for VPS customers is poor.

Support will add the domain to your control panel if you ask them to. I have 10 domains on my VPS, all of which i manage the zones of through the control panel. Of those 10, 4 are with different registrars and I still manage the DNS from the HMS control panel. |

Here's the process I recommend to most of our VPS customers.
First off if you'd like to mask your dns you can, just create 3 CNAMES for your primary domain. ns1.example.com >> ns1.lnhi.net ns2.example.com >> ns1.lnhi.net ns3.example.com >> ns1.lnhi.net Now have your customers tell their registrar to use your custom name servers. When adding domains to your VPS, it's best to login to your Customer Control Panel. Create a ticket listing the domains that you would like added to your account each on a new line. It is very important that if you do not wish to manually setup the DNS zones for these domains that you emphasize this in your ticket. Adding a domain to your control panel DOES NOT automatically create a new DNS zone. Now don't get me started on server configuration, with host headers, and ServerAliases |
