I received this info via email two weeks ago and thought I would share for those who haven't heard about ColdFusion 8 Codenamed "Scorpio"

In case you missed the buzz at MAX 2006, Adobe took the "wraps" off Scorpio in keynote presentations and sessions by members of the ColdFusion engineering team. Scorpio is still under development but we can give you a preview of things to come, including:

1. The new Scorpio "server monitor" feature -- This web application (with a really cool front-end of Adobe(R) Flex(TM) 2 software), simplifies troubleshooting during development, helps identify performance bottlenecks on production servers and allows administrators to monitor overall server health, while receiving alerts if something goes wrong. Additionally, an API allows you to write your own front-ends with things like custom monitors, bots or server health reports. To learn more, see Ashwin Mathew's MAX presentation on the server monitor by visiting the following link:

http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Scorpio?trackingid=PPGV

2. Image manipulation functionality -- provides both high-level tag based abstractions for common tasks like resizing, cropping, and format conversions -- and low-level processing of images with the addition of over 50 functions to the ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML).

3. More advanced enterprise integration -- allows ColdFusion applications to natively access .NET objects, integrate with Adobe PDF files and forms, and more.

Adobe is planning to release Scorpio in mid-2007

Am I the only one excited for this release Very Happy I Can't wait to see what else is included in the release. I've read a few other features supposedly included, but I don't know if they are "Official".

As a Ruby on Rails convert, I respect CF, and know that I would love the features you mentioned, especially Image manipulation. One think Ruby/Rails is still lacking at is the Enterprise, Webservices and XML though.

Scorpio is looking excellent Smile. I've been waiting for native image manipulation for some time now - it seems that all of the custom tags out there have their quirks. Also from what i've heard about the built in monitoring tool, it sounds like SeeFusion might have to rethink their target market! From what I heard, you can dig into a process fairly deep and actually identify lines of code that are taking more processing time than others (sounded like a CFTRACE but done at a server monitor level without the code). Now the .Net integration is a big "who cares" in my book, but I'm assuming they are doing this to push back against BlueDragon's latest integration efforts.

What I'm hoping to see is some good Flex integration without the use of the Flex/CF event gateway (ya there's flash remoting, webserice call, etc, but pew...). Otherwise they could bring event gateways down to the CF standard ed. users - I'd be okay with that too Smile.

CF 6 to CF 7 was an incredible leap for functionality. If they make that same functionality leap with CF 8 (scorpio) I'll be very impressed.

Cold Fusion has always been hard to manage when running a multi site enviroment, I wish they would split up some of the settings in the admin side of CF. It would be much more benificial if settings such as mappings, datasources, mail settings, etc. were all set at the sandbox level so that multiple sites could use the same names (logical path, dsn) on the server but specify the values for their specific site.

So does this mean that all future CF releases will be named after Bond villans? Goldfinger? Jaws? Blofeld? Scaramanga aka The Man with the Golden Gun?

I'm looking forward to a beta @ HMS. After all, HMS had the biggest Blackstone beta program. (at least I hear, I wasn't a client then.)
@Jamie, I thought you were the email master.... When did you move to sales? Hope you enjoy your new department.
