hey, any tips on creating multiple ftp sites under a vps plan? for eg ftp.address1.com sends my to the folder of www.address1.com... ftp.address2.com sends me to www.address2.com
when i try to create ftp sites i get the error that a duplicate name exists. may have to do with ip address or something... i tried to create virtual addresses but that doesn't work for me... it doesn't recognise my the password for some reason. Any ideas? |

Hey there.
The Microsoft FTP Service does not work that well unless you Isolate users into a "Home" directory. But then again, it's a pain to get it to work with multiple sites. Overall, the FTP manager through IIS is not at all configurable You should use something like Serv-U FTP. That's what I use, and love it. Its very easy to use, and to administer, and you can create as many sites as you want. You just have to be sure you disable the FTP service in the admin tools of windows to run Serv-U. Any other questions, let me know! |

Probably would help if I added the link on how to do this huh.. http://thelazyadmin.com/index.php?/archives/282-Isolating-IIS-FTP-Users.html The one key is you need a directory called "LocalUser" to get this to work correctly. |

Hmm, thanks J.
I'm going to have to settle for normal accounts, VPS won't work for me... i like it, but i simply don't have the time to manage it. |

By the way following the instructions has continually brought up this eror for me. I was told you had to change the port values for every new site you create. Doesn't say that in the article but...

My Best advice:
don't use IIS's FTP. It's just not as scalable as other alternatives. A good free alternative is FileZilla: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ |

Yeah.. Sorry I didn't mention that. That's the only downside to Microsoft FTP. Like I said initially, for one site it's OK, For multiple, I would stick to a dedicated FTP client like Serv-U FTP or as dbodner said, FileZilla is also a good choice. |

It's really your personal preference. I've never used FileZilla, so I can't comment. I use Serv-U because it has good administrator skills, and via ColdFusion you can integrate with it and create users, etc. That's mainly why I use it for the integration. As i mentioned ealier in the post, unlike Microsoft FTP, you an isolate users to their own directory, set bandwidth params, activity, etc. Try them both. Filezilla is free, and Serv-U has a trial period I believe. |
