Email issues since Postini?

I've signed up for Postini, been past the 30 day trial, it works ok, not the greatest, I still receive 20+ spam messages a day still.

Problem I am having is this. HMS staff hasn't been able to respond or correct the ongoing rejection of my outgoing email. I have sent in email headers, full copies of the emails etc. I have been told that I had configured spam filters in smartermail which caused Postini to reject email or not let anything go out. I found that hard to believe because I haven't touched smartermail or configured any spam filtering since the addition of Postini.

Why can't Postini and Smartermail work together? Why does my outgoing email sometimes get rejected or returned and the headers state that it was rejected by postini, if I even decyphered that correctly.

Thus far it seems to me this is more harm than good but I'll wait to hear from HMS regarding this if they can respond.

For almost all clients postini has been a great anti-spam filter. I personally user it and do not get any spam, and we swithed our own corporate mail inbound mail to it as well (see our MX records). Usually when someone is getting spam still there is something set wrong somplace. SmarterMail and postini work properly together, just the Anti-Spam features conflict with Postini. Mainly the SPF record checks will cause messages to fail. The reason this is a problem is because the senders SPF record does not include postini's IP addresses (as they shouln't) but all of your mail is going to be routed through Postini's IP addresses.

Usually when you are still getting spam it is becuase spammers still send directly to the server because they are caching your old MX records instead of having the updated MX records of postini. Another reason is because aliases are added that forward to your email address. An alias means if you have sales@domain.com and info@domain.com that both forward to johnd@domain.com. If johnd@domain.com is filtered by postini and you dont have info@ and sales@ added as alises in postini then postini will not filter the email, and when its forwarded on our server it will be a local delivery and never sent through postini again.

Another culprit is domain aliases. If you have both domain.com and domain.net but you only add domain.com then anything sent to domain.net will not be filtered. You will have to add domain.net as a domain alias (you can do that in your control panel) for the mail to be filtered. This is free.

If you PM your ticket numbers I can take a look into this for you.

Thanks for the offer. I called HMS directly. Unsure if I made any progress or not. I was told by Johnathan to save the dollar and not use postini. Then I spoke with Vinnie who could not seem to find an issue with the emails submission. He did however state that he sent out emails from my domain to a few select accounts I provided to him. These people afterwards reported never getting any email. This makes me very concerned. Furthermore, Johnathan had found out the reason HMS did not respond to me was because all the tickets I submitted were held in a whitelist que on my root email account for some unforseen reason.

As of now I disabled postini, and apparently Vinnie was going to setup smartermail with a list of spam features. I have logged in and saw that nothing was setup and I have received 350 spam messages in the past two days........

It seems to be a catch 22. I setup rules and a filter list in smartermail, then stopped receiving email sometimes, was instructed by HMS that the rules were the issue. Removed rules, bombarded with spam again, put rules back, add postini, more email issues arise. It's like saying, here's a new car, but you can't drive it, just look at it. Why have smartermail if you can't use it?

In closing, I'm somewhat dissapointed as my problem has not been fixed, I have a TON of spam coming to me on a daily basis with no means to eliminate it aside from switching to my own dedicated mail server?

Tech problems aside, Johnathan and Vinnie were awesome via phone, support was great, no fault of HMS, how could they know what was going on since all tickets were stuck in limbo.

The spam fight continues!

Hello,

If you are using SmarterMail there is only one queue so not sure what they had meant about the whitelist queue causing the problem. Postini shouln't be effecting your outbound mail we only utilize them for inbound services, so canceling postini shouldn't resolve the problem of the reipients not getting the emails. We have servers for outbound mail, but I'm not in the office now to check them. I won't be back in the office until Sunday evening but if you send me a PM with your domain/account number I can take a look at your setup an see what we can do to help.

hello,

I got a scenario here. My email-id shibu@verbat.com have subscribed to postini and i receive 'ZERO' spam.

I have two other email-ids - india@verbat.com and canada@verbat.com. i want to forward the mails from those to email-ids to my email account. please note that india & uae dont have subscription to postini.

Will this create any issues or will i get spam mails?

Hey,

Since postini does not have india@ and canada@ in their database they assume its to a user that does not wish to use their service so no filtering is done on the user. Once it reaches your server to the india@/canada@ account it is automatically forwarded to the shibu@ account doing a local delivery so it will never be filtered by postini. To have those to users filtered you can add them as aliases in postini. Goto login.postini.com and login as the shibu@ address and click My Settings - Add Alternative Email Addresses - and add those in as aliases. The quarantine report will now show anything blocked going to all three of those addresses.
