PHP create zip for download

With a linux and php setup, how to create a zip file and download. This will not be for general
use, this is a tool I'm working on for ourselves, just three of us that build websites.
So it does not have to be on a lot of web sites just the one we use for ourselves.

I have found tutorials online, my question is how to go about this with hostmysite.
Do i ask them to install pear or go with the example here at HOWTO: Local PEAR installation on shared host

or is there a better way i have not seen, not using PEAR.
