This one's for you Dave...
Quite regularly we see articles that talk about Linux as a desktop OS. Most of the time, they're entitled "Linux not quite ready for desktop use.." or something like that. That's because they're written from the perspective of someone who's using Windows. But what if it were the other way around? What if Linux were the dominant OS? How might Windows be reviewed then? NewsForge has just such a review. http://os.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/05/18/2033216 |

wow thats pretty cool!
see, its not just me and I can see some of his woas, like with my lcd monitor, its a LG very common yet xp wont reconize it and you think it looks great until you plug it into the mac (which reconizes it and adjusts it right there) and holy crap it improves like 10 fold! I would disagree with him about the ease of use in linux, I liked linux a lot but OS X BLOWS it away. |

I actually thought it was a pretty compelling article. And good example there Dave. It's not often that Windows supports the new and great stuff without hassle. Remember all the crap everybody went thru with 2000? Worked great and stable... but wouldn't/couldn't install anything new or great (like new vid cards - and then it didn't exactly support media anyway, soundcards, etc).

Interesting article... However, just in my own experiance I have had more trouble with Linux not detecting my hardware for use straight out of the box than Windows. I have run into the exact issue where Linux could not and would not detect a NIC, ended up having to buy a NIC just to run Linux with networking. With so many different and varying flavors of Linux, the average consumer is probably perplexed...

Connie, don't get me wrong... I've had my hardware support woes with Linux too... but you'd be surprised the amount of hardware that Mandrake/Suse supported out of the box than Windows 2000...
WinXP is slightly different, but loosing footing as well... but I still prefer windows *jab jab @ Dave* |

I refuse to use XP, i've been on Win2K pro for years. I almost never reboot, even my workstation at work. I usually don't have windows issues, as much as I have crappy applications on windows problems. Homesite regularly makes left click stop working and copy paste stop working and as soon as I close it things are fine.
The real problems with windows is that dumb users use it, so when something goes wrong all they do is complain about problems that are mostly their fault. Installing software with spyware, downloading viruses, deleting system files because they were "huge". Reason you don't here as many complaints from Linux users is, that these users are computer savvy. I'm sure if Linux was more widespread and dumb users were on it, there would be a ton more software to screw up the OS, and a ton more dumb users removing system files to crash the system. The one good thing Linux has going for it in that case is that it has the perception that it is more complex to use. |

http://www.winbook.com/store/personalize_step2.phtml?PkgId=x_705806 http://eracks.com Interesting thing about eracks is that if you buy your opensource laptop or rackmount from them, since the OS is essentially free, they have a spot on their order form for "donation amount" and it's from $5 - $25. If you enter an amount here, they will match your donation dollar for dollar and send it to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. |

well i wouldnt concider myself a "dumb" user and I have all kinds of troubles with windows. Even on a fresh install.
Linux always seemed to install and reconize all my stuff better than windows. You can buy any puter with windows on it and make the company take it off and issue you a refund for the cost of windows, it's in the eula. Did u see mac will run on intel now? interesting, u still have the problems with inferior components in a pc, like a quote i saw yesterday "Apple is the top of the line hardware company who happens to thrown in a cool os" |

You must either have some ancient legacy hardware then or be the exception to the rule since nearly 99% of manufacturers today build their hardware FOR Windows and then "support" Linux with driver updates etc... |
