Has anyone else seen a huge increase in the number of spam messages getting to their inbox lately?

The last few days most of our sites have seen a pretty big jump.

The good news is that it will die down again. The various spam filters at HMS (before it even gets to us) will catch up to whatever new is happening. This seems to happen every once in awhile.

Yep, we've been seeing it as well.

Just seems to be the eb and flow of the internet ...

Are you seeing spam from any one host? If it's someone within our Network who is abusing our AUP, we can work to correct the problem.

The last Received line in the header indicates the originating host.

Unfortunately there's nothing that can be done to prevent SPAM originating from outside our network, other than emailing the domain's abuse@ address, or setting up some sort of filtering service such as Postini or SpamAssassin.

And even then, it's almost futile since so few ISP's have the resources or care enough to check their abuse emails regularly. Not saying it's not worth submitting of course!

I would suggest going through this forum and looking at all the "Sticky" articles in the email section. If you implement everything listed there as a suggestion I can't imagine you getting more than a few spam messages per day per user.

The spam, of late, has been huge. My VPS clients are noticing it too.

I am looking forward to upgrading to SmarterMail 6 -- probably I will do so after SmarterTools does a point release of SM 6.

Jamie, could you point us to some of these sticky articles in the email section that detail ways to optimize spam filtering in SmarterMail 5.x? I've seen a couple of these Sticky articles but I think I am missing something b/c i have implemented many of the measures described in them -- but I'm still getting spammed senseless. =)

Thanks for any advice.

This HMS Developers' Forum continues to be a great resource.

Eric,
I highly recommend upgrading to SmarterMail 6. It has a ton of RBL and spam settings that are implimented out of the box. I am using the default RBLs plus a 5 minute grey list. Thus far I get maybe 1 spam email every 3 or 4 days. I have a few domains which seem to be spam magnets, and their spam has stopped. The best part is SmarterMail 6 is very efficient, and doesn't hog memory like SM 5. Mine is using about 35 MB's. Highly recommend it!!!
