The FTP connection to my web space appears very unreliable. Continous timeouts and i have used it in the various modes, and tried using Dreamweaver and Filezilla.

Any issues one should know about?

Have you tried enabling/disabling passive mode from within Dreamweaver? I've learned that Dreamwaver sometimes doesn't play nicely with passive mode enabled.

Problems with services such as FTP typically come down to a network latency issue between you and your FTP server. To get a better idea of how the data from your network travels to the FTP server you can use the tracert command:

http://www.hostmysite.com/support/info/tracert/
