i am using the default block settings in smartermail anything with weight 10+ gets moved to junk email folder

Bayesian Filtering
SPF Pass
SPF Fail
SPF Soft Fail
SPF Neutral
SPF Invalid Record
SPF None
DomainKeys Pass
DomainKeys Fail
DomainKeys None

and this has worked well for more than a year.... until today. suddenly hundreds are spam emails are getting through. anyone else seeing a change?.

Same with me. I'm getting lots of spam lately. Why are the spam lists missing from my spam filtering settings? As shown in this screen shot, there are spam lists available. Use greylisting I have mine set to 10 minutes
I wrote a blog entry about this. Grey Listing will kill spam

But then you get pissed off engineers who can't even wait 2 minutes for an email. A lot of times they will be on the phone with the person waiting for the email.

True but this is only an issue the first time. I believe that grey listing keeps a history, so you don't have to wait 10 minutes every time.
