| SmarterMail 5.5 Mailing List problem -- Digest Mode |

Hi. On my VPS at HMS I use the SmarterMail 5.5 mailing list software. It's working adequately.
The mailing list name is lcp@careplanners.net. Many subscribers subscribe to the lcp@careplanners.net mailing list in Digest Mode. When these subscribers receive, at the end of the day, their daily Digest delivery of email messages from lcp@careplanners.net, the Digest contains multiple replies to the same message. That is, when non-Digest subscribers reply to a message from the lcp@careplanners.net mailing list, they simply hit Reply in their email client program (like MS Outlook) and reply to the message and their reply contains the original message. Then someone else replies to that reply, and the new reply contains the original message plus the first reply message. Then someone else replies to THAT reply, and this new reply contains the original message plus the first and second reply messages. Etc. This really bugs Digest subscribers on the lcp@careplanners.net mailing list. Is there a way to get SmarterMail 5.5 to remove redundant replies from Digest messages at the end of the day? Thanks for any advice. Eric |

Unfortunately not that I know of - the Digest is acting 'as it should' since each user is sending a NEW reply that just happens to contain a copy of the old reply in it. I doubt it would even be feasible to make Smartermail 'smart' enough to figure out what repetitive text should and should not exist.
I would advise discouraging the use of 'include original message in response' with those on the list, though I know that's a poor 'solution'. |

Jamie,
Yep, I've been encouraging people to not include the original messages in their replies. However, that's not working. My social engineering has failed. =) >>>I doubt it would even be feasible to make Smartermail 'smart' enough to figure out what repetitive text should and should not exist. I think you're right. Thanks very much for the reply. Have a great evening. Eric |

Thinking about this even more, I'm positive that I'm right (which doesn't actually happen that often). When the digest is compiled it is done so simply by pasting together all of the emails that were a part of the last 'batch'. Since the emails with included text are just like any others, and there's no special header info to discriminate the included text from the 'new' text, the digest is forced to compile it all.
In the same vein of thought, if someone has 'include original message in reply' enabled and they reply to you there is no setting in Outlook or anything else that can hide that original message from the response you get. If you can't do it with a single message, then you certainly wouldn't be able to do it on a digest level. |
