You are now speaking with Erlend J. of Sales.

John: Hello Erlend

Erlend J.: Hello John, how can I assist you regarding url rewriting modules?

John: I am intrasted in hosting my site with your

John: We do not use any url rewriting modules. We use the standard ASP.NET url
rewriting functionality that is built in

John: Do you support built in URL rewite on ASP net

John: ?

Erlend J.: yes

John: What are the ASP.NET version installed on your server ?

Erlend J.: our Foundation Plan servers support classic ASP, our ASP.NET servers support classic ASP, ASP.NWT 2.0 and ASP.NET 3.5

Erlend J.: ASP.NET 3.5*

John: Can you please update me IIS version, ASP make & version, any specific modules installed for built in URL rewrite ?

John: Is there anyone available in your windows support department ?

Erlend J.: just a moment please, im pulling up that information now

John: I have lot's of technical questions now

John: OK

Erlend J.: we don't have a "windows support" department, just a support department

John: We have moved our site on new host and their server do not support URL rewrite , so I want confirmation that which module you are using

Erlend J.: ok

John: otherwise I will move site and your server will not support then it will create problem for us

John: We do not want to messup now

John: I hope you can understand

John: Smile

Erlend J.: I do

John: Take your time Smile

John: Hmmm....you are taking long time

John: Are you not sure about version of components installed on server ?

Erlend J.: we're running IIS6 with Microsoft .Net, v1.0.3705, v1.1.4322, v2.0.50727, v3.0 and v3.5 I'm still checking into the custom modules- I apologize for the delay, but we there are custom modules that we have installed on some servers but not on others at customer requests, I'm looking for a solid answer on that

John: Sure

John: Juts let me know the name of that custom modules

Erlend J.: I'm sorry for the delay, I was just consulting with one of our system engineers to get a complete answer regarding modules. What he told me is that we do not have any rewrite modules installed, and that we do not support the ISAPI module on our shared servers

John: Yes, Exactly ....I do not want any 3rd party rewrite module , but do you have built in ASP.NET rewrite module ?

John: My basic question is "We do not use any url rewriting modules. We use the standard ASP.NET url rewriting functionality that is built in"

John: Are you there Erlend ?

Erlend J.: yes, we have all the default modules

John: If you will forward me to support team then I can get exact answer

John: This is my request to you , please forward me to correct person, who have idea about ASP.NET

Erlend J.: ok. I'm attempting to transfer the chat now

John: Thank you very much

John: You are so help full Smile

Unfortunately the chat is buggy, but you should be able to specify your rules in the web.config and support can change any necessary mappings. I believe the wildcard might need to be configured to the .NET dll so that the URLs are passed to be handled by your rules instead of a standard error page pulling up for 404. You can always email support@hostmysite.com too.

Even though modules can work, I have found I have more control using a custom 404.aspx. I just setup my custom errors 404 to redirect to 404.aspx. Then I have some code on this page that parses the paths and redirects them to the appropriate page. You get a nice boost on search engines by doing this.

Sounds like John is using some sort of In a Box system. Maybe if he spent more time writing his own code, instead of using prefabricated templates he wouldn't spend the majority of his time being a **** to the friendly support staff at HMS. I always try to be really nice to the HMS support staff when calling in, because I know you guys have to deal with morons like john.

I recommend using the new Routing stuff in 3.5 over the URL Rewriting modules.
