I am new to CF MX and new to a hosted enviroment. I'm still using CF 5 and Studio 5 for my IDE. The boss sees no reason to upgrade.

Now I have a contract project where everything, except the data, is brand new.

I was hoping for some suggestions since I won't have CF 7 Studio.

I guess I could keep using Studio 5 and turn off code checking....

Thanks in advance for any discussion.

Actually MM stopped supporting CFStudio with 5.5. Although they have had new tag completion definitions, etc come out.

A good freebie to look at may be Eclipse.

It has a lot of the goodies like tag completion with the CFEClipse plug-in, although I think the tag definitions are still 6.1, but I'm sure 7 will be out soon. No RDS and no FTP browsing, or VSS, but you can FTP download to your local drive as welll as upload. There are also CVS modules.

UltraEdit is another one, but is more notepad like than anything, but customizable.

Don't even bother thinking about Dreamweaver, it is such a slow product, that all the time saving tools are negated.

Thanks. I'll give Eclipse a look. No RDS may be too much of a down side. Studio sure is a great tool for a "old school" coder like me.

I agree about Dreamweaver. All the graphical page designers just generate too much code that I have to try and read and decide where my code should go....

I guess with Eclipse you have to FTP your changes to the server while you are working?

Thanks

Is a good article on Eclipse and the CFEclipse plugin and where to download and how to install the CFEclipse plug-in.

Keep in mind RDS would be just for your local dev. We don't enable RDS on shared servers, and probably most hosts don't do this.

Another option would to just find the CF 7 definitions for Homesite. I think I have the beta version of this at the office. Let me know and I can email the .zip file to you.

I will download and try the Homesite trial version today.

I installed CFEclipse this weekend and it was quite a resource load on my PC??? I didn't really give it much investigation.

You said you have a "Beta" version. Does that mean CF 7.0 code recognition or the whole Homesite product for 7.0?

Thanks

Homesite really looks like what I'm used to.

What exactly was the beta product you said you might send me?

Thanks

look up robs blog he has the whole package of cfeclipse stuff in a bundle http://www.robrohan.com/blog/

I totally disagree with what you guys say about dw. It is a bit of a hog but really so is everthing that is actually useful and with the cfmx7 extension it really gives you a ton of power. Or better yet the Flex builder is even better than dw and supports flex as well. Plus when you buy dw u also get hs+ just in case you still want it.

Personally I think eclipse is hard to use and basically impossible if you are build a site that is even somewhat compliant as u need to see what you are doing to get it done faster which is where dw really shines. And after the initial start up of dw it runs fine and isnt a burden. It's like anything new, just takes awhile to get used to.

Macromedia also offers a free trial of Homesite 5.5 at http://www.macromedia.com/software/homesite/ . Another client who is new to the Coldfusion realm downloaded the trial and gave us some feedback a week or so ago.

but homesite 5.5 isn't the same as homesite 5.5+.

Homesite 5.5 = the old reg homesite
Homesite 5.5+ = the old homesite and the old coldfusion studio

I have all the CFMX 7 tag completion tags (well at least RC1). What are you referring to? Homesite 5.5 had all the CFMX 6.1 tags and functions, and it integrates with VSS for us windows handicap folks.
