Just curious - who all has used the SmarterMail anti-spam features, and what settings do you find work best?

Jamie, I override the domain spam filtering options and go with this configuration:

Bayesian Filtering = 5
Reverse DNS = 10
SPF Pass = 0
SPF Fail = 30
SPF Soft Fail = 10
SPF Neutral = 0
SPF Invalid Record = 0
Spam List: ORDB = 15
Spam List: SpamCop = 10
Spam List: SpamHaus SBL+XBL = 15

Low = 10 (add text to subject)
Med = 15 (delete)
High = 30 (delete)

I still get a little spam that slips through, but I setup Outlook filters for most of that stuff.

The SPF's just recently appeared in my spam filter settings and i don't see info about them on your website (looks outdated): http://www.hostmysite.com/support/smartermail/domain-filter/

What is SPF? I keep a pretty good tan as it is Very Happy

I left the Spam Check weighting system at the default values, but changed all three probability levels (low, medim, and high) to "delete message."

In addition, I've created a list of domains to which messages are bounced back. Most of which end in foreign extensions (e.g. all domains that end in .ru, .nz, .de, etc.).

I still receive about 1-3 spam messages per hour, which seems to be more than with the previous email client.

I use the following spam settings on my personal email:

Spam Check Weight
Bayesian Filtering 10
Reverse DNS 30
SPF Pass 0
SPF Fail 30
SPF Soft Fail 10
SPF Neutral 0
SPF Invalid Record 0
Spam List: ORDB 10
Spam List: SpamCop 10
Spam List: SpamHaus SBL+XBL 10

And they seem to work fairly well.

Here's my own take on what the best weights are:

Spam Check Weight
Bayesian Filtering 10
Reverse DNS 10
SPF Pass 0
SPF Fail 30
SPF Soft Fail 10
SPF Neutral 0
SPF Invalid Record 0
Spam List: ORDB 30
Spam List: SpamCop 10
Spam List: SpamHaus SBL+XBL 30

I give SpamHaus more credit because I've never seen a truly erroneous entry on their list. If they list you it's for a really good reason. Also, the ORDB gets high marks because if you're running an open relay then I don't want to hear from you. SpamCop I would almost consider going the other way and dropping them down to 5 simply because they blacklist too easily.

I do not see all of those spam options I only see these spam options when I select domain spam filtering:

Bayesian Filtering
SPF Pass
SPF Fail
SPF Soft Fail
SPF Neutral
SPF Invalid Record

How do you set the other options your talking about?

Thank you.

It may be that your server (incorrectly) does not have those added. Email support@hostmysite.com and I will check to make sure your spam lists are there.

I have been happy just using the defaults and allowing my messages to be tagged. Of course I also have some content filters in place that give me more control over what is spam and what is not. I tend to not get a huge amount of spam in my account, guess I'm just not popular enough Laughing .

HMS Helped me get my web accounts straight and I just wanted to say thanks. I now have all of the spam filter options and it seems to be helping. Thank you.

I'm new to this, and still playing around with the settings a bit. But this is what I have right now, and its working pretty good along with using a trusted sender list.

Spam Check Weight
Bayesian Filtering 30
Reverse DNS 30
SPF Pass 0
SPF Fail 30
SPF Soft Fail 10
SPF Neutral 0
SPF Invalid Record 0
Spam List: ORDB 30
Spam List: SpamCop 25
Spam List: SpamHaus SBL+XBL 30

Low = 10 (No Action)
Med = 25 (Add SPAM to text)
High = 30 (Move to Junk Email Folder)

Hi Guys,

Please see my spam settings. Its too tight and many genuine mails comes with the tag [Spam Low]. I then add them to my trusted senders list.

Spam Check Weight

Bayesian Filtering 30
Reverse DNS 30
SPF Pass 10
SPF Fail 30
SPF Soft Fail 30
SPF Neutral 10
SPF Invalid Record 0
Spam List: ORDB 30
Spam List: SpamCop 25
Spam List: SpamHaus SBL+XBL 30

Low = 10 (Add Low-Spam to Text)
Med = 25 (Move to Junk Folder)
High = 30 (Delete)

Bayesian Filtering? Spam Check Weight? It's all Greek to me... I don't see anyplace on SmarterMail that refers to those terms. Is this something extra?

In lieu of this, I've just begun blocking all those IP's suggested on the other thread... although seemingly they represent half the world.

They are probably getting marked low because you have weight 10 on SPF pass, might want to change that to 0.

Allen, there is a glossary of terms here that might be helpful

Sorry Connie but that link does not lead to a glossary... it only goes to "My Spam Filtering" and there is nothing there about Bayesian Filtering or Spam Check Weight (nor any of those other terms listed on this thread).

My point is... my Smartermail does not refer to those terms anywhere. All I have is this:

Options
Actions
Trusted Senders

Use default spam settings
Override spam settings for this account

Low Probability of Being Spam
Action No action Delete message Move to Junk E-Mail folder Add text to subject line

Medium Probability of Being Spam
Action No action Delete message Move to Junk E-Mail folder Add text to subject line

High Probability of Being Spam
Action No action Delete message Move to Junk E-Mail folder Add text to subject line

Maybe HMS stuck me with an older version? Like maybe from 1965? Smile
