Just wondering what anyone out there is paying (generally) for Colocation here at HostMySite.

Is it cheaper than dedicated server hosting since you provide your own server?

Usually Colo is more expensive than dedicated, although I am not saying that this holds true with HMS. But usually the case is that Colo costs more.

Also, Dedicated is more convienient (for us) in the sense that when something goes wrong it's not "on us", whereas with colo you're still responsible for everything unless you pay the hosting provider for other professional services (usually charged hourly so it adds up quickly).

I actually just received a quote, and it is cheaper than running a high end VPS. Granted, you need to purchase and build the server yourself. But in the long run, I believe it's far cheaper than VPS and dedicated

Depending on what type of server you want to host as a Colo (1u | 2u | Full case) you can easily get a colo server cheaper than a high end vps account (.net builder plus / cf builder plus / vps premium). This costs you $149.00 a month and gives you 7 IP addresses and 1000GB of Transfer, plus its your hardware, you aren't sharing resources with anyone else as well. I'd definitely recommend it if you have the hardware and want to do more then simply host a few sites on your server.

The downside with colo is that we don't support the hardware - so if a drive gets fried we can't be held to our SLA on it; and there is a $75/hour charge for any work we do with the hardware....


...as opposed to dedicated, where we replace hardware within an hour and also upgrade you every year or to in order to keep pace with the current technology.

tldr version:

If you want mission-critical, go dedicated. If you need your own server but aren't concerned with 100% uptime then go colo if possible (though you will pay more to start).

Interesting.... we have been using the dedicated. Might have to look in colo though.

1u or 2u simply refers to the size of the server. This is commonly also referred as a blade server.

1U = 44mm high
2U = 88mm high
