Hello
Instead of sending an email off to sales, I figured I'd post my questions here, in the hope that people may bring up things I may have forgotten to ask. The host I'm with has been experiencing issues for quite some time, and support is generally 'eh.' With ColdFusion 8 entering beta, HostMySite offered free CF8 space, while it was in beta, which really brought my eye to them. I've checked forums, and HostMySite comes pretty highly recommended. So ... Eventually I'd like to run a site on a server that has CF installed, but for now, the prices are keeping me away ... I work with Windows servers right now, so I'm going to stick with that when I move to VPS (or above). My current site is on Linux, however, and runs WordPress. So, depending upon resources, I'll want to install PHP and MySQL, or I'll have to look for another solution for my existing content ... So, with that background, here's the questions I have; 1) Say I sign up for Windows Base VPS - how easy is it to upgrade from that plan in the future? For example, if I want to upgrade to one of the ASP.NET VPS plans. Or, what if I end up needing more space, or RAM, or bandwidth; can I pay a (monthly) fee to upgrade my existing plan? What about the setup fee if I upgrade from one plan to another? 2) For now, I'm looking at quarterly, and am therefore going to purchase a domain through GoDaddy. When I purchase a VPS plan, should I just do "I don't want to use a domain name (IP address only).", or "I want to use an existing domain name." in step 2 (I'll probably have the domain name by the time I purchase, but I just wonder whether it matters, since I should be able to add any number of domains in the future anyways, right?)? 3) Does anyone have any experience using PHP/MySQL on the Windows Base VPS plan? I've installed PHP/MySQL on Windows before, but I just wonder how the Windows Base VPS plan handles these installs. 4) ASP.NET; are there any real functionality differences between .NET on the Windows Base and Windows ASP.NET plans? Since I'll be gone for 24 hrs, thanks in advance for helpful comments. If I missed a question, please let me know. Thanks! ~James |

Hi James
1) For additional resources, you will have to upgrade to a new plan and that means going to a new VPS. A little inconvenient, but you'll know you are actually receiving all those resources. And no setup fees on the upgrades. 2) Doesn't really matter which one you select, though I would probably go with the one saying you already have an existing name you wish to use, so the account is setup under that name. It's easier to remember and if you should need support it's easier to look for blahblah.com then 76.234.23.4. 3) Depending on the traffic, it might a bit much to run all that on just 256 MB of memory. Installs are really no different than a regular install on a Windows machine. I would suggest going with a shared MySQL database, just because MySQL doesn't run that well on Windows (compared with Linux), so you'll have speedier database on the shared Linux based MySQL server and you'll save resources on the VPS. 4) The .NET VPS offers more space and and memory, so the functionality is basically the same. |

Ah, so there's a shared MySQL option available too ...
Thanks for your reply Connie - it's greatly appreciated! ~James |
