i just got my first lcd a lg l1720p which completely blows away crt monitors, its amazing!
but 1 thing i have some problems with is the fonts.
they all seem a bit hazy and i know the monitor should be crystal clear just not sure where to set it at.

and yes i have turned on cleartype fonts (xp)

on linux it flat out is clear as a bell but for the small part of the day i have to work on windows its a lil bit fuzzy, any suggestions?

Disable ClearType - or better yet, tweak it.

http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/1.htm - and yes it involves an activex control... get over it. This will help make things better. If you can't tune it the way you want, then disable cleartype.

i 1st tuned it with the downloaded power tool

thats odd everywhere i have read says to turn ON cleartype
from that page

With Windows XP, ClearType delivers improved font display quality over traditional forms of font smoothing or anti-aliasing. ClearType improves readability on color LCD displays with a digital interface, such as those in laptops and high-quality flat panel displays. Readability on CRT screens can also be somewhat improved.

ClearType makes everything smooth... if it looks fuzzy to you, then it's too smooth. Is the LCD set at it's optimum resolution?

NP. I have only worked with LCD's when work provides them for me... Personally I don't like them. Not only do I do graphics but I game and an LCD just doesn't provide any flexibility. For instance if I'm playing a game and it plays better at 1024x768 rather than 1280x1024, I can't just bump down the res and still have a good picture.

LCD's are only made to work well at one resolution...

For reasons like that I'm a CRT lover Wink

Josh - you and I see eye to eye on that one - I'm a gamer and as such an LCD just doesn't do it for me...I want 21" at 1280x1024 at 85hz or higher...I don't think there's an LCD that can do that...not at my price level anyway...I have twin 21's and wouldn't trade them for anything...if I need to see what a site looks likeon LCD - I pop upen my laptop...

When they start making reasonable 21" LCD's that have a good refresh rate - then I'll look into it - till then I'll stick with my 21" CRT's

So is what I see on my laptop an indication of what I would see on a lcd? If that is the case, I won't be changing. The colors don't look right on my laptop so I can't design there. They are more washed out. The only difference in my settings is the laptop is 1400 x 1250 and monitor is 1280 x 1024 and that shouldn't make any difference on colors.

Sadly I don't have enough free time to play games (or watch TV anymore for that matter), but I'm happy with LCDs. I also know several professional designers who use LCDs and have found the color quality to be perfectly fine- they are using Apple Cinema Displays.

LOL!!! Well that explains it... when you pay the price for Apple hardware it better not only work better than expected, but it better take care of my kids, wash my dishes, and change my oil, too!!!

im gunna have to disagree with u guys here
the clarity on this lcd completely puts a crt to shame!
i have 2 puters in this room the other has a 19" top of the line NEC. this lcd is so realistic, bright, vivid and sharp and the crt is dull & lifeless, completely looks like crap next to it. I truely cant believe the difference in them.

as for games i dont play much but i ran medal of honor on here and even it blows away the crt one, which i thought the crt would be better given that was the big hit on lcd's (the gaming was bad, ghosting and such), not a problem at all.

its appsolutely mind blowing how different they are!!!

the apple ones are sure sweet but $2000?

mine was $340 at bestbuy & there is no ? whatso ever, its WAY better than a crt

and im just running a crappy nvidia gforve 4 mx vid card
not to mention i only have the lcd hooked up to analog connection
im gunna order new vid card so i can use the dvi digital hook up which from what i have heard is amazing.

Nice... that's really cool Wink I just got a Radeon 9800 Pro - I'd highly recommend it!!! And if it's big deal to have "top of the line" hardware, then you can do like I did and OC it to 9800XT speeds (just a few mhz over what the 9800 Pro runs at) - because they're basically the same exact thing.
