I have followed the tutorials for how to set up SmarterMail on my Windows VPS:

http://hostmysite.com/support/vps/windows/smdns/
http://hostmysite.com/support/vps/windows/stiis/
http://hostmysite.com/support/cpanel/dns/basic%5Fmanager/

multiple times!

I can get to the web-based mail with mail.mydomain.com:9998. Mail.mydomain.com resolves to my default website. Where have I gone wrong? What do I have to change to get rid of the port number?

Thanks,
Michelle

If you want to get rid of the port number, you need to use IIS to control smartermail. First, you need to disable the Smartermail webserver (which is what gives you port 9998)

Go to Administrative Tools -->Services

And shut down, and disable Smarter Mail Web Server Be careful NOT to shutdown SmarterMail Web Service

Now, since Smartermail is not providing it's own web server (since you shut it down), you need to setup a website in IIS.

Create a new website called SmarterMail

Setup the host headers as mail.yourdomain.com (you can put other domains in here to)

You can find detailed instructions from this point at:
http://www.smartertools.com/Help/SmarterMail/v3/Topics/SystemAdmin/Installation/ConvertingToIIS.aspx

If this wasn't what you were trying to accomplish, let me know.

Hi Jason,

I did all that which is why I was perplexed that it didn't work. I chatted with tech support and discovered I was supposed to put port 80 in the SmarterMail website I set up. I had it set as 9998.

Everything's working great now.

Thanks,
Michelle
