Does anyone know if HostMySite will be offering a SmarterMail 4 Pro Upgrade to Windows VPS users? The license originally given to us was for SmarterMail 3. I went to upgrade to SmarterMail 4, and it asked me for my new license key for SmarterMail 4.

Hi Jason,

I am a new CF VPS+ customer. My default program was v3. Smartertools sent me activation email and told me to download v4. I understand this is a Pro version with 50 domains and 250 users not the enterprise one. I think better if HMS gives this information on VPS Windows CF description pages.

I had asked to support whether I should install v4 . Waiting for an answer.

I can tell you I just got a VPS CF+ account and the license was for Smartermail Pro v.4 so I would assume HMS has some upgrade path or something.

Sofar we're putting new accounts on SM4, but as it stands anyone that purchased an account on SMv3 will need to upgrade themselves.

Hmm.. Well that's depressing. I thought for sure HMS would provide a free upgrade. Sad
Jason, that's easy!

Jason, that's easy! Purchase one month of Windows VPS, and you've got a new license! (39.95) Receive free setup from the promo located at thewhir.com. Ok, maybe that isn't the most honest thing to do, but hey!, I got a SM3 license for free with me beta.

When I purchased CF VPS+ v3 was installed. When I applied for a licence from SmarterTools I have been told to download v4. Need to figure out how to upgrade now. Is v4 stable enough now?

Just the greylisting features in SM4 make it a worthwhile upgrade, it's help cut my spam from hundreds to just a few which I can live with.

Well answering my own question... Big spam difference with SM4 way better. I have NOT enabled greylisting so my guess is that SpamAssasin is responsible. I am a little bit worried about the memory leak issue I hae been reading about I hope it doesnt bog the server down too much.

Anybody here having performance issues with SM4?

SpamAssassin on Windows generally isnt very stable. I know of at least 1 dedicated customer who had to turn off SpamAssassin altogether with SM4 because of the performance issues it was causing.

The problem is basically that SpamAssassin generates a new thread for each email it has to process, which really isn't very effective at all.

You will probably be better off with simply enabling greylisting, and if SPAM really starts to become a problem, Postini is always an option - we have gotten a lot of good feedback on that.
