I haven't really seen anyone bring this up. If someone did, I apologize for posting it again.
From what I could tell, it sounds like I have to email support in order for my subdomain to point to my account? If that's the case, then why can't it be done automatically (through the control panel)?

You can do it automatically from the control panel.
Log in
Go to Domain Name Administration -> DNS Administration
Then select Basic or Advanced and it's pretty much self explanatory from there
