mod_perl and the VPS accounts

I was wondering if there is a simple way to add mod_perl to the hostmysite.com VPS accounts. If not, can it be done the normal way (compile the sources and modify the httpd.conf). From what I've seen, the VPS's do not have a gcc compiler as well as a few other dependencies that mod_perl needs to install. Is it even possible to get mod_perl on the VPS accounts? After realizing how much better it is than plain ole cgi, we are desperate to switch to mod_perl. Please let me know!
