Hi,

Here's a bit of an Embarassed question perhaps but what are theese and what do you put in them?

vti_bin
vti_cnf
vti_log
vti_pvt
vti_txt

I have a website http://www.pilgrimtarja.com (it is in swedish) on a server and it works even if I have not used the above folders.. I would like to make it right though and use them if it is better.

I have found that when I alter my website and "put" it back again I sometimes loose the images on the page and have to load them separately. Can I use any of these folders to avoid this problem. I use dreamweaver to buid the site.

Hope anyone can help

Those folders and files relate to FrontPage- if you are not using FrontPage you do not need these (you are also very wise for not using Front Page).

ok - agreed you need to steer clear of FrontPage whenever you can cuz it is a piece of crap and the bane of most web developers. And yes it's true, you can also see what's in these files pretty easily if the sysadmin hasn't locked them down as he should have. But these files aren't a security risk. There's nothing in them except stuff for version control and authoring.

Maybe they fixed it but you used to be able to go right through the vti bin to gain access to the site, I would concider that a security risk.

That is a server issue with Front Page extensions. Not an issue with the vti files & directories themselves. A technicality I guess but still...on an IIS server that is setup correctly with FrontPage extensions, or better yet one that does not have FrontPage extensions installed on it, or even on an Apache server, those files & directories do nothing.

Either way you slice it - the moral of the story is AVOID FRONTPAGE AND FRONTPAGE EXTENSIONS AT ALL COSTS.

Yeah, I gotta say although FrontPage makes some things 'easy' for the end user to setup, there are other tools out there that don't have the side effects that FP has. A good option for the end user that still doesn't want to get into coding or doesn't have the time is Macromedia Contribute. Its cheaper than M$ FrontPage too Smile :
